In the eyes of most mountaineers, South Cotabato’s highest peak is an extreme adventure; a challenge that must be conquered. But for us, it is God’s given playground. An exquisite, magnificent package for us to enjoy and bask in its glory. We call it, Mt. Matutum.

Hiking Matutum is
aint as easy as getting at the foot of it. We got the word EXTREME for that one. Among the many routes taken to reach Mt. Matutum is the Glandang route with its 6-8 hours phase depending trail. There is that constant 80% chances of rainfall so, the idea of ascending wet as a puppy is pretty much realistic.

Mt. Matutum is abundant in bodies of water such as springs and falls, however, as you reach the peak, the only source of water is a small crater with sulfur containing water (expect a yellowish orange sight). If you are sensitive to such types of water, it is advised that you bring at least 3L of water (just bear the weight that comes along with it). Aside from that, wild berries and poison ivies (alingatong) are your “friendly” companions along the trail, not to mention the varieties of floras and “kalbangi” (butterfly) that you will encounter. The vast expanse of biodiversity in Mt. Matutum is heartwarming and inspiring in such manner that only you (who will experience it soon) can understand.

HOW TO GET THER

Board a bus from General Santos City to Polonuling Highway in Tupi. Enjoy a ‘habal-habal’ ride to Sitio Glandang which only costs 60php (long packs are rated 160 pesos per motorcycle). It will be a 20-30 minute ride to the official jump-off from the DENR outpost in the Sitio. As practiced (by most people), a guide is necessary in the ascension. Guide’s rate is 300/day.
